THE GROCERS' AWARD
(Per Press Association.) . CHRISTCHURCH, November 26. ■The Arbitration Court commenced its sittings here to-day and dealt with a number of claims for enforcement. An important point arose in connection' with the Grocers' Award. _For some time past, grocers have been employing young women in their shops, particularly in the confectionery departments, arid also on occasions to servo behind the counter, that being part of the duties of an ordinary grocer's assistant. A grocer was charged to-djay with failing to pay these gir's the wages fixed by the award for grocers' assistants. For the prosecution it was argued that girls employed practically as grocers' assistants should be paid the same rate of wages as a male assistant, and that, while the award only mentioned male assistants, that must be taken as comprising female assistants. For "the defence it was represented that under the Shop 3 and Offices Act, girls were given tte right to work in grocers' shops, and that as long as the wages specified by that.Act "were paid the Court had no power to interfere. Decision was reserved.. .
