In regard to the holiday for factories^ and shops on election day, the " Time*'" states that the Department has obtained legal advice, which is to the effect. that it is compulsory for all shops that, require to close in the ordinary way on Wednesday, afternoon to close on Tuesday afternoon (Election Day) instead. Shopkeepers need noif of course, close on the Wednesday, ; and the same applies to those who usually close on Saturday. At the .usual monthly meeting of tlie> Wanganui, Hospital Board yesterday . the resignation of the House Surgeon, Dr. Fergus, was received, that gentleman being.-..about, to visit the Old Country. Dr. Valentine, InspoctorGeneral of Hospitals, attended and spoke highly eulogistic terms of the local institution. It was, he said, the* fifth hospital in importance in the Dominion, and a more capable matron was not to be found in New Zealand. Dr^ Valentine strongly urged the claims of Ta hape to a c:ttage hospital, and at the conclusion of his remarks Mr Gilbert Carson gave notice to move at the next meeting in favour of granting the request subject to the people of Taihap© undertaking to make a reasonable contribution towards the cost. A new probationer was appointed, and a quantity of routine business dealt with.
