A few days ago while Mr A. Thompson, builder, was making an excavation in his factory in Taupo Quay he came across ah old solid cannon ball some six feet below the surface. The ball, is about 5 5-Bin. in diameter and weighs 23_lbs. It is evidently a relic of the early daysjof Wanganui. The specimen has been presented to the Museum. At Okaiawa to-morrow a memorial service will held in connection with the anniversary of the Battle of Te Ngutu-o-te-Mana, where 'Major Yon Tempsky was killed. We understand that some Wanganui reterans will be present. Mr W.. Fox, the .well-known native interpreter, who, as & child, was present at the historic battle, will be among the party. Mr William Gardiner, the well-known builder, met with a nasty accident on Thursday afternoon. He was driving home from a funeral, and when in Campbell Street his horse became restive and threw him out of the trap. Mr Gardiner will be confined to his house for some time as a result of the accident. A "meeting of fruit importers, to consider the island fruit regulations, was held at Auckland on Thursday afternoon. Many strong speeches were made. Mai Brown (entomologist) referred to the different species of flies, declaring that the Government regulations were not worth the paper they were printed on. He said that the only fly that would breed here was the Mediterranean species. Experiments had proved that the Queensland fly would not breed here, and it was only the Queensland fly that was in the islands. A resolution was carried strongly protesting against the regulations, and urging their immediate withdrawal. The secretary of . the Wellington Cooks' and Waiters' Union, Mr E. J. Carey, arrived in town yesterday to attempt the formation of a branch of the Union in this town. Mr Carey states that several communications have been received by his Union from Wanganui hotel workers urging it to extend its operations into the country towns of the I\V ellington Industrial District. A meeting of the workers in the trade is called for to-night, when Mr Carey under instructions from his Union, will plaoe before-the meeting the Wellington Union's, views on the question of improving industrial conditions of the hotel workers of Wanganui. While excavating road metal from the «t. John s Hill gravel pit Mr W. Hogan camo across three masses of gravel which contained very old fragments of bone. Tho fact that the bone ls «" soft, and that it was found some 100 foot below tho surface, shows that it must bo of a good ago. It is impossible to idontify tho bonoa owing to their fragmentary character, but in one specimen tho bono is two inches in thickness. Whe-ro tho bones woro found tho shinglo is comentwl together into very hard' lumps, caused', no doubt, by tho limo from tho bone forming a kind of cement. The spocinions are nonlodged in the Museum, and can bo seen on enquiring at the Curator's offico.
