ON MISSING SHIPS.
The Aeon, n, big steamer bearing American and English mails from San Fraii'cisco to Auckland,, is a month overdue : and there is a reasonable probability that she has foundered or g-'uie asliore. The Hawpa, a Nsw Zealand Reamerj-,a-ecently drifted for weeks in frequented seas, in close .proximity to a dangerous coast. It 'really saems to bo about time that shipowners took some .steps.tp mest cases of this kind. I don't know ouite what "the ' possibilities of wirelesstelegraphy are with regard to this matter; but somo authoritative statement on tho, point would clonr the way. If the scheme is practicable. r>9rhaps the Union Company (which has suffered much lcrs anrl anxiety from drifting ships) misrht be prepared to lead the way. If ordinary
messages could be transmitted by wireless telegraphy from Union ships at sea, tho installation might even be a good commercial undertaking. Some member of Parliament migut do well to ask , for a return giving' detailed information as to possibilities and cost.
