BODY FOUND IN HAGLEY PARK.
(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, August 30. The body of a female child, much decomposed, was found in Hagley Park on Saturday evening by the police. At the inquest, held to-day, Chief Detective Bishop stated that he found the body on the bank of the Avon River, to the South of Victoria Lake, lying two or three feet away from the river, and only a few yards off the recognised track. The body had no clothing, but was partly covered with dry leaves, which had dropped from the surrounding trees.
Dr. Symes, who made the post-mor-tem, said the body was that of a fully matured female child. The umbilical cord had been cut, but no ligature was put on it. The child appeared to have breathed a short time, but there were no apparent marks of violence. The child probably had been dead from three to five weeks.
The jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show the cause of death.
