AUCKLAND, August 21. Mr John Marks, an Auckland resident, claims to have solved the problem of a reversible turbine, and Press representatives who were shown a working model state that ifc appeared to demonstrate the truth of the assertion, steam being shut off and the engine set in the opposite direction in a few seconds.
. GISBORNE, August 22. The Railway League has congratulated Ministers on the opening of the Auckland-Wellington railway, and hag offered its warmest thanks for the activity at present displayed in the Gis-borne-Rotorua line, on which 130 to 140 men.are now working. ■■NEW PLYMOUTH, August 21. Shortly after midnight the head waiter at the White- Hart Hotel, when returning Jrom a dance, disturbed what appear to have been depredations by burglars to break open the landlord's safe. In the sitting room adjoining the bar, where the safe stands, were found four plugs of gelignite, two with caps attached, and two lengths of fuso. The Window, of .the'bar parlour was open, and a light was. found in the'sitting room. On approaching the hotel the waiter noticed "two men about the premises ,but attached no importance to their presence till the discovery was made, which leads to the supposition that a clumsy attempt was about to be made to rob the safe. - •
