MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting was held on Friday night, the main business being to coneider the question of the suspended work at tho reservoir.
Present: Crs Hihon, Sutcliffo, Gould, •Lyon and Bredin. Cr Lyon was voted to the chair.
CORRESPONDENCE
From Manager Director Barrand and Abraham stating would be pleased to give Council a trial of Notts' chemical h'ro engine on any date that suits the Council. {
From Superintendent of Christchurch Fire Brigade advising the purchase of a chemical fire engine. They had used these engines for tho past "27 years and havo been the means of saving much property.
After some discussion Cr Hilton, moved that the offer of the us© of th© chemical engine for a trial be accepted. Seconded by Cr Gould.
Cr SutoliiF© pointed out that chemical engines were all right at the start of a fire. He would favour pushing on with the loan for the erection of a station and get a larger up-to-date engine. Cr Hilton pointed out that no up-to-date brigade is without a chemical fire engine. It would prove a most useful auxiliary force.

As Mr J. F. Sicely, Borough Engineer, was not present owing to illness, -the further consideration of the suspended work at tho reservoir was postponed. A general discussion, however, ensued., bnt no auction taken. The Gas Manager reported he had obtained estimates of the cost of enlarging the coal shed. He had ordered 50 tons of Newcastle coal at 36s delivered afc Marton Junction. Satisfactory progress is being made with the erection of the gas-holder, and,, given fine weather it should bo completed early in September. Two street lamps in Broadway require (shifting, the light being obstructed by verandahs. He stiggestixl placing four in the centre of the road. There is only one column for lamp .lighting left, and after fixing a lamp at corner of Bond and Queen Streets there will be only one spare controller. It would bs advisable to proeuro more before a good supply can be supplied at the end of Bond Street it Will b? necessary to put down a main at least Sin. in diameter along Grey Street ' ■■■■■■■
It was resolved to call for tenders ror the extension of the coal shed. The oonßideration of the question of removing th> street lamps in Broadway as.proposed by the Manager was postponed to next meeting. ' Tho piirchase of new. gas column and lamps deferred to next meeting. The extension of the gas mains -io Grey and Queen Streets was deferred. It was decided that the attention of tho Operatic Society be called to the fact that-smoking is prohibited in the Hall, and if the practice is persisted m tho permission to use the Hall will he cancelled.
