TORRENTIAL RAIN AT HASTINGS.

HASTINGS, July 6. Torrential rain fell during the early hours this morning, and by six o'clock the lower parts of the town were flooded. In Reretaunga Street, near the Princess Theatre, the roadway and footpath were,submerged, and vehicles plied carrying people across. The 'Mood waters are subsiding very rapidly, and it is not thought that serious damage will result. The weather is now fine.

GISBORNE, July 6. The Monowai which left Auckland at 6.15 pn Saturday evening, ran into a north-east gale soon after her departure When encountering a heavy sea off East Cape, the cargo, especially the deck portion, shifted, and the Monowai had to run back to shelter under Cape Runaway, in order that things might bo straightened. The steamer resumed her voyago at mid-night, arriving at Gisborne at 8 a.m. She leaves for the South at mid-day.

Minor damage- to bridges is reported. There is no sign of the weather clearing. NAPIER, July 6. A phenomenaKheavy downpour of r,ain took place last night, but no damage is reported.
