Our Debating Society met in the local schoolroom on Monday evening last. Mr. Arthur O'Dwysr, vice-presi-dent, occupied the chair. After discussing and arranging business of i importance, the next open debate, which is to I>3 held on Monday night, August 5, was settled. The subject is, "Is Civilisation a Failure?" Mr. A. O'Dwyer is to open in the affirmative, and Mr. McNeale in the negative. The debate is to b3 held in the schoolroom. A large crowdl is 'fully anticipated from the district around.

Last Monday evening an address was given by Mr. McNeale on "Tom Moore." llq spoke of Moo-re's brilliancy of imagination, tenderness of thought, sympathy Avith nature, and wonderful copiousness of metaphor and purest lanftungc, and h's entrancing .melodies. Moore AA'as a lover of his country and smitten Avith her glory. A hearty vote of thanks Avas passed unanimously. A social seiid-off is tol bs given to Mr. F. E. Martin, who is, I regret to< »say, leaving- its. We have net yi^t fixed the date.

Quite a, number of our local amateurs are busily rehearsing a farce- for tho Farmers' Union social next' month.

The Ruahine Hall will be opened by a ball at the end of August. Arbor Day v.as celebrated by the schools of tits district in tree planting, saluting the colours, and singing the National Anthem.

The roads out bade are in a frightful state.
