SCULLING.
TOWNS AND WEBB FOR THE
CHAMPIONSHIP
"We take-the following from th© 'Sydney " Referee" pf' July 17tlh:-i-• La best advices from'the river. ar©;^o the effect that,- thianks to the. pleasant, weather of late, both Charlie Towns and Webb are making excellent' progress in their rowing. Charlie' is being paced 'by -George Towns . and! ; jFogwell > in a double sculler, and: they, are ibi-ingijig him along in rare style. Charlie shows his.usual finished work in his'rdwingy and his condition is '(causing (his supporters no misgivings. On.the convincing day the champion should 'be_ .fit to raw for has life, judging !by. his displays in training at present. Of Webb it may >be said that he was pretty fit when he left New Zealand,, but the westerlies last jweek naturally interfered considerably <wih his training on the iwater. To avoid losing form he indulged in suitaible land exercise. With the perfect -weather we are now experiencing, however, Webb is doing every justice to (his ropoitaßon, and being in hi3 new boat, which, he says, suits him ladmirably, he is tnittiing in fine work daily. The critics, who at first were rather inclined to adversely criticise his style, now admit that he is one of the " good' sort," and sound judges who have ibeen .up the river ot late predict that he twill, if defeated, put up. a race well worthy of so important an event. Should he lose, Webb will certainly have no excuse to make on the score "of condition. By the way, Christ. Neilson somewhat altered the work of his new boat last week, making it suit him better. Webb is, in his own quiet way 4 just as confident as ever, and his trainer'and supporters are perfectly satisfied with everything he is doing.
