MARTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The excessive downpour of rain on Friday night no doubt accounted for the poor attendance at the Tennis Club ball. Nevertheless it was a very enjoyable gathering. The floor was perfect for dancing. The music by Crozier s band, needless to say, was first class both for time and tune. Extras were played by Mesdames Ross, E. W. Broad, and Miss Wallace. An ample supply of refreshments had been provided by the ladies' committee, to which full justice •was done by the company. The committee had'worked hard to make the gathering a successful one, and it_ is to bo regretted that the unpropitious weather prevented a large attendance. The rain, -which set in on Thursday, culminated in a heavy downpour all day on Friday. On Friday night Broadway was practically under water for a little time, and the various sections wero flooded. A slip occurred on the Hunterville lino on "Friday night, near the footof Birch's hill, approaching Porewa. rhe 7.10 p.m. train from Marton ran right into it. The engine was derailed only a short distance from a cliff. Fortunately, beyond a severe shock no one was seriously hurt. The passengers walked back to Marton. A gang was put to work earlv_ on Saturday morning to clear the line.
