FEILDING NOTES.

As was generally •anticipated, the Feilding Club put tip a record as far ia» their .Spring Meetings are concerned. With beautiful weather, a large attendance, and excellent- acceptances, things were all in favour • of success. The racing was'good all through, but a number of the contestants in the open races appeared to be suffering from either staleness, after-effects of influenza, -and other minor causes. Ballarat, winner of the Flying Handicap, carried her 8.10 to victory in convincing style, and dispelled the popular opinion that sho cannot act under a bit of -weight. .Moral justified his- name in the lAorangi Hack race, by winning comfortably. Lady (Nell, who made a nice run into second place in the straight, is a mare of nice conformation. She got blocked out of her position after going a furlong, or she might have troubled the winner. ' The 'Gold Reef gelding Assayer had an easy win in the Spring Hurdles at Feilding. He looked a bit above himself, but jumped safely, his superior pace enabled him to come- away .at the right end. He should easily pay his way over the sticks. Zimmerman was made favourite for tho St. Andrew's 'Handicap, but he cracked up badly when the crucial test came, and Ghoorka, the second favourite, won easily. Zimmerman looked to be an good condition, and his running made his Derby performance look very cheap. 'Bourrasque ran a good race, finishing close to tho leaders, and it is evident that he is coming back to his form of a year ago. Douche, was strongly supported for the event, but she was never prominent. Maharanui ran a fine race an the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, and fchero ia little doubt that he will be found capable of holding his own in open company during the summer. W. Young 'rode Oapulet with excellent judgment in the Spring Hurdles, The Lethe gelding waited upon his field till four furlongs from home when ho joined the leaders, and'going to the front, eventually won comfortably from Romany King, on whom F. Lind rode a good race. After A. Lord's wanning ride on Moral in the Aorangi Hack Race a facetious backer dubbed him "A Lord oi the Pigskin." Glenculloch, the -winner of the lurst Feilding Stakes, is a colt of fine size and conformation, and he appears to be one that will stay with age. After the race the colt's rider, F. Jones, was presented with a handsome silvermounted whip, suitably inscribed, pre-

eented by Mr. Dumbar, a Feilding enthusiast. Several members of the Birkenhead family ran at the meeting and they all displayed undoubted pace. They all showed a disinclination or inability to stay out their joiirneya: Finery, Zimmerman, Idaeus, Intelligence-and Fair -Nell were all at the head of affaire in the earlier stages of the events for which they competed on Thursday, but all died out in the straight. There is little doubt, however, that they will show to .better advantage later in the season.

Six lengths lead with half the distance traversed in a five furlong race, and Finery's backers in the First Feilding Stakes considered the money as good 'as in their pockets. The filly came back to her horses as quickly as she left them, however, and was going slower than anything else passing the post. She has tremendous pace—is a second Kirriemuir, in fact— over a couple of furlongs, :but appears to be a big overgrown one tihat has really not the strength necessary to stay more than three furlongs.
