LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
WELLINGTON, August 29.
The Council met at 2.30 p.m
Tno Hon. J. Hogg moved for a return showing tho number of Chinese immigrants landing during the year ending 3ist March, 1908, and since, and the number or Chinese who had left the colony during the same period, which was carried.
The election of the Chairman of Committees was held in camera, and resulted in the choice of the Hon. Reeves.
The Attorney-General paid the usual ■compliment to the successful candidate, and flias followed hy the Hon. Smith, the late-chairman, m the same strain. The Hon. Sir IM. O'Rorke moved the ise'ccnd reading of the iDivindty Degrees 'Bill, to enable the 'University of New Zealand to confer degrees of divinity. He explained that it provided that the ■Senate should frame the curriculum of the divinity degrees so as not to favour any particular denomination, but to suit all religious denominations. No religious test was to be imposed on professor, lecturer, or student. The study for degrees could be either at an affiliated institution, or privately. On the motion of the Attorney-Gene-ral the debate was adjourned until to-morrow.
The Hon. Louis-son having spoken in reply to the debate on the motion for the Address-in-Reply, the Address ■was agreed to. The Council rose at 4.1 p.m.
