WANGANUI AMATEUR SWIMMING
CLUB
The Wanganui Amateur Swimming Club scored a decided success last night, when they held a water carnival and sports by gaslight. There was a large attendance of the public, and there is no doubt the club has hit the popular taste in their venture. The races were all well contested, and some excellent finishes were witnessed. The controlling officials, who got the various events off punctually and without a hitch, were as follows:—Judges, Messrs. Mahoney, A. Gower, and M. Hogan; timekeepers, Messrs. Bennett, W. Tuck, and H. M. Payne; starter, -Mr. H. Olds; call stewards, Messrs. G. Larking and E. Day; hon. secretary, Mr. H. J. Irvine.* The night was beautifully fine, and the baths, nicely decorated with lights and coloured lanterns, looked very pretty. Results:— 25 Yards Handicap—First heat: C. D. Campbell, scratch, and A. Miller scratch, dead heat 1. Second heat: F. Swan, 3 sees., 1; A. Pownall,'-1 sec, 2. Third heat: Bristol, 3 sees., 1; Cummins, 1 sec .2. Fourth heat: Richardson 1, Smith 2. Final: Bristol, 3 sees , 1; Swan, 4. sees., 2. Time, 15
1-5 sees. Corfu Dive.—ln this event B. Bassett, C Newcombe. Hogan, and Cummins came up through the buoy in the first round: In the second round W. Cummins and C. Newoombe succeeded, and in the dive off for the final Newcombe proved victorious. -~ , Springboard Diving.—After a long contest between B. Bassett, C. New-oombs-AM^uller, J. Hogan, W. Cum; mins, 'Rockel, I. Meuli, and Penhall, m which some pretty diving was shown, the judges deputed Cummms and Rockel to dive off for the first place, which was eventually awarded to Rockel. 75 Yards Handicap.—First heat: Bridges, 10 st-cs , 1; Meuli, 3 sees., 2. Cummins, 4 sees., and Bone, 14 sees., also started. Won on the touch. Time, Imm 1£ sees Second heat: Swan, 10 sees.. 1; A. Pownall, 3 sees., 2. Notman, 7 sees., also started. "Won by a foot after a great race. Time, 59 sees. ■Final: Bridges, 10 sees., 1; Swan, 10 sees., 2. Bridges won rather easily in 57^ sees. After ten minutes fun by Mr. Olds and his "Arabs," Mr. Olds gave a capital exhibition of fancy diving. 50 Yards Handicap.—First heat: P. Bailey, 5 sees., 1. Muller, Notman, Beavis, and Meuli also started. Won easily. Second heat: E. Bristol, 8 sees., and "Slyfield, 10 sees., swam a dead heat for first place. Bassett, Cummins, McLean also started. Final: Slyfield 1, Bailey 2. Bristol won after a hard race, but was disqualified for beating the starter. Time, 36£ sees. 100 Yards Handicap.—C. D. Campbell, scr., 1; J. Hogan, 3 sees., 2; Meuli, 3 sees., 3. Bassett, 3 sees., also started. Campbell at once went to the front and won easily.
Relay Race.—Wanganui Amateur Swimming Club, No. 1, J. Hogan, A. Pownall, jL. Meuli, and W. Cummins. 1; Wanganui Amateur Swimming Club, No. 2, 2; T.Y.M.I. 3. Won by three yards, a good contest for second place. Polo Match.—Representatives for Nelson played a scratch team and won easily by three goals to nil.
