THE NEW SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT.
IN OPERATION TO-DAY
As the amended Sl/ops and Offices Act is now in operation, atnd as we understand that iMr MeQuarbers (the local inspector) intends to enforce its provisions to-night, we publish the following for the information of shopkeepers. The closing of shops ris nob now com- ' pulsory (excepting on tihe^. half-holiday and under any requisitions under seer ijion 21 of the«main Act), 'but the amendment limits tlhe hours of -6he assistants. Employers may, if they wish, keep their premises open after the prescribed hour, 'but every assistant musb be sent away. Following the the closing hours of the various- shops:—Bakers: hour on statu-. f-ory 'balf-tholiday, 10.30 p.m.; 'hour on one working day in each week, 11 p.m.; Ihour on all other working days, 10.30 p.m. Butchers: 1 p.m., 10 p.m.,6 p.m. Chemists: 1.p.m., 9 p.m., 8 p.m. Confectioners: 10.30 p.m., 11 p.m., 10.30 p.m. Dairy produce sellers:l p.m., 10 p.m., 6 p.m. Fishmongers: 10:30.p.m., 11 p.m., 10.30 p.m. Florists, 1 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. Fruiterers: 10.30 p.m., 11 p.m., 10.30 p.m. Hairdressers:' 1 p.m., 10.30 p.m., 8.0 p.m. Newsagents: 1 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. Pork butchers: 1 p.m., II p.m., 10.30 p.m. Refresh-ment-room keepers: 11.45 p.m., 11.45 p.m., 11.45 p.m. Tobacconists, 1 p.m., 10.30 p.m., 8 p.m. In all shops oa* businesses other than those enumerated above, assistants must be dismissed at 1 o'clock on the statutory half-holiday, at nine o'clock on the evening of one day of the week, and at six o'clock on every other day. In the shops scheduled no female assistant shaUl be employed (save in refreshment rooms) after nine o'clock in the evening.
