STOPPED BY A RUSSIAN WARSHIP.

ARRIVAL OF THE APARIMA

AN EXCITING INCIDENT

Tho Union Company's fine steamer Aparima arrived at Auckland from Calcutta, Singapore, and Samarang (Java) on Sunday morning, after a very good passage. On her way from Newcastle to Singapore, in June last, the Aparima was stopped by the Russian warship Tereke, the vessel which had just previous to that time sunk the British India Company's steamer Ikhona and a Dutch merchant steamer. Regarding the incident. Captain Stott, the commander of the Aparima, when seen 'by a " Herald representative •<»-n Sunday, sand: It was about 2 p.m. on June 27th, when l-ru». Aparima was steaming through the Kavramattn Straits, when the second officer, who was on duty on the bridge, came down to my room and reported that a large warship flying the Russian flag was "'heading down towards the steamer, with n signal flying on the foremast. lat once went on the bridge, and made out the signal to be " Stop. I did not take any notice of the signal at first, when the warship suddenly sent a shot across the bows of the steamer, and, .seeing that thero was nothing e^se for it I had to bring the steamer to. A boat was then lowered from the Russian, and caune' alongside of us. There was an officer in full uniform in charge, and the boat's* crew were all armed. Coming on 'board of the Aparima, the officer demanded to see my papers, ■which he scrutinised very carefully, and, accepting my assurances that my cargo was not for'the Japanese, he signalled to the warship, and after & short delay I was told that I could pressed on my voyage, and you may be sure that that I was net long in dc-ing so. I reported t'ha niatt&r to the authorities upon my arrival at Singapore."
