RAETIHI NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
RAETIHI, September 2. Tho bachelors' ball, which was held last week, was very successful. The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and bunting. Some of the ladies were very becoming dresses. At midnight supper was served, and dancing was again resumed until 3 o'clock in the morning. Mr. McCaskev was a very efficient M.C.
Under the management of Mr. McClinchey the local dairy factory will make an early start this season, if sufficient milk is available.
Tho last of the football matches between Karioi and Raetihi was played last Saturday. The game was a fast one, but tho local boys were not up to their usual form, the play being very poor throughout. Time was called with Karioi six, Raetihi nil. In the evening the victors were treated to a dinner at the Waimarino Hotel.
Large gangs of men have commenced on the railway at Ohakure, about 8 miles from here. They are falling a four-chain-wide track and forming the track. People would think in a place like this we could get mutton occasionally, but we are unable to do so. It is over a month now since oar butcher had mutton in his shop.
A concert in aid of the school funds is to be held on the 14th. A large programme is being prepared. Mr. Duffey has commenced carting between Ohakuno and Pipiriki. His new waggon is rather light for these roads in winter, but will be just the thing for the summer months.
Mr. and Mrs. Barr have returned, after enjoying their short holiday.
The Makotuku bridge is completed, and is :i great improvement to fording the river.
