Thirty-nine horses are left in the New ■Zealand Cup. The Marton Jockey Club hold their spring meeting on Wednesday and Thursday next. Geordie has made his reappearance at Ellerslie looking hearty and well. The Australian Jockey Club's Spriing Meeting opens on Saturday next at Rand wick. The added money to the Auvkland Cup will, it is stated, this year be £1350. instead of £1500. as in recent years. Hauraki (half-brot'ner to Waiuku) and Hildebrand (half-brother tto Antares) are engaged in the West Australian Derby, to be a*un on Boxing Day. In the event of Maniapoto winning the Epsom Handicap he will have to carry 10lb penalty in the Metropolitan Handicap, which addition to bis original weight would have the effect of raisiing 'hifiC impost to Bsit 101b in the mile and a-half race.

In referring to Machine Gun's recent, winning performance, " Terlinga,' J of the. Australasian, says that it was a very fin® one, and.further ifchat Titan at his best could no* have done-better than carry lQst 61b and gallop six furlongs in linuu 14s, ■'.

The Sydney tl Telegraph '?^f August 21st says:-—" Just -when racing ;jhea had begun to despair of the New, Zealand racehorse Mainiopoto fulfdldng.^ny^pf ,hjs A.J.C. engagements, he :eiiteml/ftii ap-: <pea*auce yesfefday, and;i'wl* an4"ed safely and in good order from the Mpnowai, being accompanied by Haydn and Curfew. Haydn, -who ran second under 11.8 in the New Zealand Gtra/nd National Steeplechase, is engaged in the ibig jumping^vents of the A.J.C. week, and his presence there will do much towards increasing the interest in'them. ißut sportsmen generally are likely to be -more concerned abouit Maniopoto, who is by Soult from Lady Fisher, and is one. of the ;best talked of horses engaged at the meeting. The races he is eligible for include Epsom Handicap, with 8.4, and 'Metropolitan, with 8.0, and in the limited market associated with the former race Ihe is one of the candidates most fancied. But though Maniopoto is something of a boom accounts regarding Jus ability do not agree. It is against him that he has not yet been beaten by a horse of class; but there is this in his flavour^ that after being sold for 'four figures' he never tasted defeat, and as the best horse can do no more than win, Maniopoto may be the possessor of much galloping ability. It ds understood that Mr Stead's trainer, R. J. Mason, will put the finishing touches. ta> Maniopoto's preparation far the A.J.C. meeting, so that in the matter of training he is not likely to want.__. With Machine Gun, Nightfall, Noctuiform, Sungod, Isoltj ■and Haydn, New Zealand will be likely to be strongly represented at the A.J.C. meeting, and arg. success 'achieved will not be grudged." , Apologue's defection from the New Zealand Cup is due in a large measure to the fact diat his owner was forestalled in the betting market. Apologue is doing good solid work at Ellerslie, but up to the present Ec had not been tested. Had his owner been able to have got a fair price about his colt it vejy probable he would haye been given c chance to distinguish himself in the big two mile race.
