At the Police Court Francis George Grigg was charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of his .wife Rebecca, which the Coroner's jury found was accelerated by wilful neglect on the part of the accused. The evidence given showed that the wife was in delicate health, and died under distressing circumstances, but the husband had asked a neighbour to visit her on the day of her death, and the neighbour had attended the deceased,, while accused obtained a doctor's services. CHRJSTCHURCH, July 31. The Supreme Court criminal sessions commenced this morning. Joseph Tfaackwell, for a bi'each of probation, was ordered to pay £1 per month till the arrears (£6) were paid off. Andrew Carl Semb, alias Nelson, false pretences, a series of charges, was sentenced to three years on each, the sentences to be eoncunrent. The case of Peter Duncan, charged with theft from a, steamer, is being heard. Peter Duran, for having stolen a sailor's bag, was sentenced to on© month's •imprisonment. Clarence Banto-n Avas sentenced to three months' imprisonment for indecent exposure. George Jones was acquitted on a charge of having assaulted and robbed Robert Haslett of 15s. AUCKLAND, July 31. In the Supreme Court, Michael O'Neill was sentenced to eighteen months for misappropriation of £47 10s the benefit fund of the Electric Tramway- Compay., of which he was treasurer. WELLINGTON, July 31. The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened this morning before? Mr. Justice Cooper. His Honour, in his charge to the Grand Jury, said that there were eleven cases against eleven persons, and he commented on foiu* of these being offences against morality. He was glad to say that there was a probability of an amendment of the law by which a Judge could order the clearing of the Court during the hearing of such cases. The young woman Matilda McLellan, who "pleaded guilty to stealing cattle near AVoodwille, was admitted to probation. At tbo Supreme Court to-day, Henry Bailey was sentenced to three years imprisonment for breaking and entering. Charles Nelson was found guilty for forgery and endorsement, and remanded for tllv; report by the Probation Officer.
