Thero was a good attendance when the match Somerset v. Australia began to-day. Thel weather was fine and the wicket hard. Puyritz, Richardson, and Thomas replaced Lee, Hardy, and Cranfield in the county team, wliile Howell, Gregory, Hopkins, and Newlands stood out of the Australian team. Darling won the toss, and sent in Trumper and Armstrong to face tho bowling of Braund and Thomas. After each batsman had narrowly escaped playing the ball on early in their innings, they opened out, and runs cam© quickly, 145 appearing as the result of an hour and a half's play. Then Tvumper gave Palairet an easy chance at extra mid-off. Ho gave an admirable display of allrcv.nd cricket, though the innings war, marked by less cutting than usual. At 74 Trumper completed his thousand runs for the season. Armstrong, who was 55 when Tnimper retired, had obtained the score chiefly by excellent driving. Armstrong and Noble remained at tlio wickets for the rest of the day, and when stumps were drawn the total stoo dat 469 for two wickets. Armstrong indulged in magnificent driving. H ewas missed twice in one over off Braund, first when at 205 and again when at 215. Oft tho same over he scored 20. He knocked up 100 in 135 minutes.
