LIGHTER DIFFICULTIES

GISBORNE, July f.

The lighter Tawera (oil engine) was returning from the Taluno at 5.30 p.m., having taken in tow the lighter Titi. The Tawera was forced on to a shallow bank of sand near the. groyne at tho river entrance. The -towline beoamo taut, and the Tawera was swung round. Soon both boats were in difficulties. Tho Tawera, after bumping against the groyne, was run well up on to the westward beach. The Titi was secured and anchored in sheltered water. The damage (if any) to the Tawera is not ascertainable. AH hands are safe. Tho last launch did not go oub of tho river with the passengers. The Talune has been detained until the morning.
