CORRESPONDENCE.
A SUGGESTION
To the Editor
Sif, —It has occurred to me that there are cases in which tho Government should adopt an attitude different to the course they at present pursue. What I mean is this 7 We are constantly reading of persons in the colony who aro comiing in conflict, with the law by reason of their weakness for liquor, and who are in contequeii'o3 frequent occupants of the goals. I think that instead of allowing thiiS sort of th'ng to go on the Police Department should have power to send such persons (provided they are willing) to another part of the world, where they would be away from all their old assooiatiome and have ft chance to start life, afresh. This would bo beneficial both to the colony and the erring ones. lam not advocating the sending of criminals to ipeist another part of the world, but srimply those who_ ar>3 unable to resist tinea1 desire for drink. There is no need to particularise, as I am sure readers must have some cases such as I mention in their mind's, eye.—l am, etc., VOX POPULI.
