BIG FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, January 16. An Austrian boardinghouso at the corner of Swanson street and Mills's Lane,' occupied by Mr. Nicholas Green, waa practically destroyed By fire at about midnight on Sunday. A man named Douglas Stargeman, who was sleeping on the grtnmd! floor, was aroused by the ciiackiizig of flames in the next room. He was opening the .window •when the police arrived, and was assisted out -with •his effects. He llost £7, which was in his trousers pocket. Green was absent at the time, and the only other occupant of this house was his) son, who slept in the rear of the building, and who was awakened by the baa-k----ing of dogs in the back yard. He immediately rusbsd out into the street, having no tinna to dress. The brigade soon arrived on the scene, and succeeded in subduing thlo flames, but not before the building had been completely gutted. A few articles of furniture were gat out, but %h.a loss is practically a total one. Hie building was owned by tho estatt© of the late Hon. W. Swanson,, and «s far as can be ascertained was ntot insured. Tho furniture was covered by a policy of £100 in the Liverpool and London land Gfoibe, office. There is nothing to account for the orig'n of the fire.
