Justice \Vi3iliams, .to-day in the special case stated for the opinion of the Court in reference to the Bile Beans Company, which .'imported one million pi.ils by the . Warrimoo and paid duty thereon as for druggists' sundries, valued ait £133 6s. 6d. The Caistoms claimed that they ; should be treated as proprietary medicines, valued at £1250, and demanded £184 4s. as. additional "duty. The company paid under protest. The question, for the Court was whether the pilils were a patent or a proprietary medicdnei in the meaning of the Act, and as to whether the facts disclose a dispute as to the proper rate of duty within the meaning of section 52 of the Customs Act, 1882. The Judge decided that- the pills wero not a patent medicine, and the ■facto disdlosa a dispute. GISBORNE, December 2. At the Magistrate's Court, ; May Keeny, a domestic servant, was brought up on remand on a charge of having caused; by-inattention tile death, of her infant child, found on the ' Waimat© road. Evidence was given by. Dr. Schumakea' that the child had1 breathed, atidi was a full-timed, healthy child, which with ordinary care and attention would have lived. He accounted for its death, through'neglect and inattention. DTJNEDIN, December 2. . ' . AUCKLAND, December 2.. A fine of £100 and! costs was inflicted in tine Police Court this morning upon Percy Arthur Had/Ley, Auckland machinery merchant, and now a bankrupt, who was charged with presenting false invoices to the Customs in . November, 1901. The Crown Solicitor's representative stated that an invoice for machinery imported was presented by Hadiley alleging it to be of the value of £651. Since he became bankrupt; the Official Assignee ascertained from documentls that the goods were actually valued at £835. An elaborate system of evasion of the Customs duties had been' carried out by the accused. Had'ltey's solicitor stiated that ho was.laid up when the invoices were. presented, bub he did not blamo tho clerks. WELLINGTON, December 2. In order that he might fully consider the cat©, the Resident Magistrate today remanded until Monday Oscar Garrick, aged 18 years, who admitted a charge of indecency. He was a'so convicted of two other charges of common assault" on young ©iris whom he had accosted in public places. Robert Buirke, a young man who came to the colony several months ago, as greaser on an oven&ea steamer, pleaded guflty before the Stipendiary " Magistrate to-day to having assaulted a young lady on Friday last. He was remanded for sentence to the Supreme Court. It appeared that on the evening in question the lady, -vyMe walking tloher residenoo in Majoribanks street, was accosted by Burke, who seized^ heir. She screamed for help, and he endeavoured to throttle her, saying he would commit murder urf.esss she ceased.
