A PORT CHALMERS CASE.

DUNEDIN, December 2. At tiha Police Court to-day, William Henry Smith, brewer, was charged with, sanding packages of i'iquor to Port Chalmers, ,vn a no-license district, the packages not bearing distinctly written thereon a statement that they contained liquor. The case amso out of a raid madia on NeiK'is premises at Port Chalmers recently, when fourteen gaillon kegs of beer wero found. Smith, when spoken to, said he knew nothing of the matter, and referred the police to his clerk. Wright,, the cork in question, gavo evidence that a young man called for beer ,and sad he had a man outside to cai"t it. Wiitnesy oancdLLed the duty stamps and went to tho cellar man, who said the young man would have to wait while the beer was put into kegs. Witness toild -the young man to come to the office as soon as the beer was ready, intending to give him tickets, but the young man took the kegs away without witness seeing him again. . . ■ ■ / Mr: Graham, S.M., sad .it wag evident that the been- had been taken away without the content of the defendant, who was in ClirisfcchuTch at the time, or Wright, who had given the;- evidence straightforwardly.
