HORSES
Keen competition characterised nearly all the horse classes. Perhaps the most conspicuous falling off numerically was in the draughts, largely accounted for by the dispersal sales held during the year by Messrs. Nathan; Bros., who sold their Kairanga stud farm and their stud draught stock. In former years the name of Messrs. Nathan. Bros, has been prominent in this section of the catalogue, and the absence of their representatives is sufficient in itself to account for the numerical shortage. Half-a-dozen sturdy stallions were catalogued JM the class for over four years—Lord Elderslie, Inzievar, Odd Times, Lincoln. Stamp, and Major Robin. Champion, honours were awarded to Lord Elders-
lie (H. McDonald), D. Buick's Odd; Timeisi taking second honours. Colts, with the exception of a couple of youngsters, were conspicuous by their absence, but there was fair competition in the mare and filly classes. Mr. J. R. Perry's Be TTp-to-date was the only competitor in the class for 8-year-old colts, and was awarded the Ist prize. A couple of 2-year-olds, entered respectively by Mr. G. Chandler and Dr. Graham, had the class to themselves, the doctor's horse catching the judge's eye, while a quartefite of likely youngsters faced the judge (Mr. Archie McNicol, of Clevedon) in the class for yearlings, of which Hunt Bros.' Merry ' Drayman was adjudged the best. There were stronger numerical competitions among the mares, for which seven (competitors entered, Mr. H. McEwen's Mary of Argyle taking the championship ribbon. The fillies ■were represented by a couple of 4-year-olds, a similar number of 3-year-olds, and two youngsters foaled since August, 1903, the Ist awards falling respectively to H. Lofts' Whakaatu, T. Kerin's Rawena, and R. Tanner's Miss Macaulay. Among the class for useful horses G. A. Gamman and Co. secured Ist and 2nd for best pair .of horses in regular work. The other awards in the draughts classes were :•—;Heayy 4 gelding, a mare shown in dray or spring cart, H. McEwen's Mary of Argyle, 1; R. Tanner's Maggie McCauley, 2; aitd G. A. Gamman's Jack, 3. The thoroughbreds numerically were about up to last year's standard, but the quality of the horses shown was •particularly good. The championship for sires was secured by H. Grices Nestor, W. F. Mcßeth's Handsome Jack 2, and D. Buick's Papakura 3. E. Stevenson's Mahaki and E. Stevenson's Entry :by Explosion—Toitoi were given championship honours for mares, the same owners' entries also taking 2nd and 3rd. R. S. Abrahams' Sandix secured Ist for best yearling colt, A.
