Mr. Thorpe has been chosen Mayor of Motuaka for the rest of the year.
', .Captain Hayward, mate of the steamer Herald, has been appointed assistant pilot in Wellington. Professor Lichtwark, well known throughout the colony as an educator of horses, died in the Gisborne Hospital. '■News was received in Palmerston on Wednesday of the death of Mr. Morford Cottle, in Fiji, where he went a few months ago. Mr. Cottle was a wellknown dentist in Wanganui same years ago. Latest advices reoeived from Bishop Juius, of Christchurch,_. report a satisfactory improvement in his health. Writing from Switzerland on August 25 the Bishop stated that he hoped to sail for New Zealand at the end of . the year. ■ : # Mr. Edward Armitage arrived in town yesterday afternoon to make arrangements for the season of the Tay*lorCarrington Company, who appear here on Show niights, playing "The Gipsy Queen" and "The- Shaughraun." Says th.9 "New Zealand Herald":— On October 26 there passed away at his residence, KJhikihi, Mr. Patrick Hayes, one of the oldest residents of the dis-trict,-at the age*f 70 years. Deceased arrived in the colony in the year 1362 in-the Queen of Beauty, which, on the voyage out, was chased and stopped by the Alabama. '■*"*,■,■ Mr. Townsend Macdermott; the father of the Victorian Bar, reoeived a unique birthday present from the Bendigo Law Institute. It took the forniof a retainer, accompanied by the customary fee, and an instruction to look after a. young man named Macdermott, 86 years of age, who had recently been indulging in reminiscences in the Argus. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Ne'Mgan.) received the Rev. Patrick Cleary from the ministry of the Church of Rome into the ministry of the Church of England, in St. John's College ChapeL Mr. Cleary signed the declaration of assent to the Book of Common Prayer and •.the Thirty-nine Articles, and of submission to the General Synod of the Church of the Province of New Zealand, and took the oath of canonical obedience to the Bishop. Ordination was not "necessary, as the Anglican Church recognises the orders of the Church of Rome. The celebration of Holy Communion followled the reception into the of 1 England. ■■;-■-•' ". . ■'.
