SYDNEY, September 4.

A tragedy is reported from Manilla. An old man named John Hines was left by his wife sitting in a chair beside the door. She returned after a short absence, and found her husband in the same position with his head split open. He was dead.

The police arrested a swagsman, running the gauntlet of several shots he fired.
