The Manganui Chronicle. "NULLA DIAS SINA LIMNA." FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1903. THE PORIRUA TRUST.

Following the now historical judgment ol the Privy Council, the Trustees of the .much-litigated Trust havse lost no time in pToaeeding to carry out the scheme as sanctioned by the Supreme Court, and upheld by the highest Court of Law in the reaJam They announce that they bavie opened in the Wajitarapa a school for Maori boys, and thajt free scholiarships will be .granted out of the Poiiiruia Trust to boys residing on the West Coast, preference being given to those who belong to the Ngatitoa tribe. Out of funds other than thie Porirua Trust, .a school for, Maori boys has been established near Oarterton, and an English clergyman has accepted the position of pijilncjpal, and as now on his way to the colony. Thie establishment of the school, * should be pointed out, has not cost the Porirua Trust fund anything. Whtere it will be utilised is in providing tlid free scholarships to which, we have refemied. The new school is located on the estate of the late Lady Tancred, near Oiareviille. Boys wil receive free board, ed'uoaMon in the English language, religious teaching, and, industrial training. Parents ,will 'be required to provide their boys with suitable clothies. To West Coast naitriyes a special notice! states that free scholarships wilil b,e granted ouiti of tlie Porirua Trust to boys .residing in that locality, preference .being given to those who belong to tlie Nigatitoa tribe. The temporary Principal of the school .is the Rev. William) Ronaldson, for many yeara Maori Missionary in the Wairarapa, and! who, it is interesting to note, wais in. dhai'ge of the old Papawai School whicb*was broken up on account of the war. He will act unt.il the arrival of the gentleman appointed; a» Principal—the Rev. S. G. Compton, 8.A., Emmanuel Colege, Cambridge. Mr. Compton, who jb a brother of the Rev. A. W. H. Comptort, vicar of the Wanganui Parochial District., left, England for the colony on 4th June. Tlie scheme is said to> be acceptable to a large majority of tihe thinking natives Aviho claim to be directly interested, but who complain, and not without some iteason, of th-e great delay that has taken place before any attempt -at fulfilment of the trust. According to a statement 'miacte by the Trustees to a representative of th|e Wellington "Post," the result of tlia litigation will be that gifts of land by thie natives, originally of small value, which have been improved! and! rendered valuable by tha expenditure of mon-

eys of the Church of England, will be mow : used in founding free scholarships for natives exclusively. It would appear, therefore, thfet although the terms of the Crown grant are that children of all races may be maintained at the scihool, the scheme sanctioned by the 'Court deprives European and other children! from the advantages of the Trust, ho tibe exclusive benefit of a limited! section of Maoris, Tlie establishjment of the school, however, is an earnest that something is being done, that some real use is being madte of the long dormant Trust, and for that apason, if for no other, thle working of the scheme will be watched with k,een intenest. The establiishment of th!e school should prove of benefit to the many Maori boys who reside in this part of tihe district, and we trust thatb the advantages offered by the institutiion will be brought under their notice.
