ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

NAPIER, February 10.

A man named Stevens, who arrived by steamer yesterday from Gisborne, attempted suicide by cutting his .throat, in the police cells this morning. On arrival of the steamer' yesterday he claimed police protection, and am inquiry on board showed that Stevens had been acting strangely -on the voyage down. He was accordingly looked up on a charge of lunacy. He .came out of the cell about ,9 this morning for awash, and' returned shortly afterwards; but when the police opened the cell at 10 to take him to the Court h«> was found to have attemipted to cUit his throat with a piece! of glass. The1 wound is serious, but is not expected to prove fatal.
