The twentieth annual sports meeting held under the auspices of the Wanganui Caledonian Society was .commenced yester- 1 day on Victoria Pjvrk. The weather was glorious, though perhaps rather warm during., the early portion of the afternoon. The beautiful weather, and the fact that in addition 'to the usual sports programme contests for the Caledonian championships, would take place, had the effect of attracting a record number of people. There was a very large attendance of Highlandel's and pipers, and as they marched on to the grounds, headed by the Wanganui Pipe Band, they made a brave show. Among the visitors were Messrs R. D. D. McLean (Napier). R. K. Simpson (Manaiwatu), J. Grant (Palmerston), C. Cameron and T. Parker (Hawke's Bay Caledonian Society), Rule and Dalgleish (Oamaru). Donald Grant (Hawera), J. R. Stewart' (Manaia), McKenzie Forbes (Scotland), J. McKechnie (Dunedin), Pipe-Major Morrison (of the; Melbourne Highlanders), D. Campbell (Wellington), Lockhead (Fefldiug), and others.. The sports, on the whole; were very interesting, though some of the events were not so well competed for as the prize money offered deserved!. This was particularly noticeable in the .championship eventsl, which had been looked forwai'd to with interest. In the essentially Caledonian games Carlson canied off the palm, winning the hammer-throwing, stone-putting, and wrestling evjents. The wrestling was detoidedlv disappointing, Carlson having practically no opposition. In the pedestrian events L. J. Furrie ran very well, securing the 100 yards championship, 440 yards championshipi, and 4<+o yards handicap. D. Smith, the Queensland champion long distance runner, gave exhibitions of his capacity in the mile and the half-milei. His finish in the mile was worthy of a 220 yards race, and the spectators deservedly applauded him-. The time was smin:. ,25sec, which constitutes a record. A. W. Watts was also in good form, annexing fairly easily the 100 yardst and the 120 yards hurdles. The cycling events brought out large fields, and some good racing was seen, .but there was a tendency on. the part of some riders to "harnj back" -r-o, proeieedhig- -which- has .been: the- means of making cycling all but a dead sport. The piping and dancing events were well contested, Messrs J. McKechnie and McKenzie Forbes being the moist successful As usual, Mr W. R. Remington Avas at the helm,'-.-and'-'he .carried out his duties in a most satisfactory manner. The other officials also did valuable service, and almost ■everything.conducive to a successful sports meeting was done. During the afternoon the Garrison Band' nlayed the two test selections to be performed at the Master- ] ton contest in February. The firs£ piece played, was "Le Domino Noir" (Auber), arranged by Swift. This1 "was followed, Inter in the day, by "Un Baillo In Maschero" (Verdi), arranged by J. and W. Hume. The pieces were splendidly played, and at the conclusion, the band was heartily anplauded.
