SELF-DEFENCE.

Received January 6, 11.12 p.m.

SYDNEY. January 6.

At a meeting called by advertisement, the Rev. Treniaync Duncan explained the reasons which led to his departure from and subsequent return to Australia. A financial difficulty had arisen in connection with establishing a church in Westralia when he first came to.Australia.,, and it gradually increased through having to pay exorbitant interest. The burden became so intolerable that it led to the fatal blunder of leaving under the belief that he could recover himself by a lecturing tour in America. When he realised the blunder he decided to return and face the .situation. He stated that his* total indebtedness was under £3000, and he believed he could clear himself. He complained of the harcli treatment of New South Wales Congregationalists, and repudiated the charges of dishonesty and trickery current in certain quarters. He said he had blundered, but was not guilty of intentional acts of dishonesty.
