Thompson diid most of the scoring!, andi soon got; a splendid hit foi 6 out of the ground', off Hcwden, and another boundary in the same over. W. B. Cave was then put on, instead oil Howden, and Warner brought 50 up by driving Fa<n- . nin to the boundary. Thompson cut Cave ', Avell for 4 off each of two balls in succes- , sion, and1 Banister replaced him, Howden going on at the railway end! in place of [, Fanniin. Thompson skied him to ■'the boundary, where J. Marshall diropped! it, a mistake which he attonedl for soon- after by accepting a more difficult chance from the N same batsmani, also on the boundary. In the meantime, however, Warner had played: j / Bannisfrier on. 80—3—27. The retiring batemmn had given a fine exhibition of ca^eful defence andl vigorous hitting. Tlien the Marshall brothers., again got together, and made a long stand, though both batsmen were somewhat lucky in being let off by the - Iwicketkeeper. Whatman, however, hadl his reyjeng6 in stumping both batsmen when the score was in the forties. Each had! made some fine strokes, and had defended! well against what was undoubtedly veryfine bowling on the broken pitch. After this there was a lamentable failure, only Fainm and Ridddford jhowinc a bold front, thcfigh these two hit out well for 11 and 7 respectively.
