HOKITIKA, November 12,
The four prisoners who recently escaped from the Hokitdka Gaol appeared before the Magistrate to-day, charged with escaipiinsr from custody. Only formal evidence was taken, the prisoners reserving their defence. They were committed to the next sittings of the District Court. They complained of being1 placed in close confinement since their re-arrest and being placed on bread and water, also that no visiting Justices had seen them. The Magistrate promised to see that Justices visited the gaol to inquire into complaints. AUCKLAND, November 12.
William Richardson*, charged with disturbing Sir Joseph Ward's meeting at Auckland, was fined £2 and costs. CHRISTCHURCH, November 12.
The Supreme Court criminal sittings opened yesterday morning, before Mr Justice Denniston. "True bills were found in all the cases. William MacdonalH Fraser was sentenced to six months for the theft of a bicycle, and William McConnell to 12 months for the theft of money. . '
