ARBITRATION COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH, September 23
The Arbitration Court began its sitting in Christchureh tliis morning. William Sparrow, tailor, of Afiliburtott, was fined £5 and costs for having unlawfully dismissed a "worker while the dispute was
pending.
The Court gave its decision on the point raised by the Typographical Union which clharged Whitcombe and Tombs, the Lyttelton "Tiimies," Chrustchurch "Press1," and Weeks and Co. with a breach of the award given in 1900 fixing the hours a* 48 'and wages at £3. When the Factories' Act was amended in 1901 the hours of women and boys were fixed at 45. The defendants them reduced the hours of all hands in the jobbing departments! to 45, and also reduced tihe wages of journeymen, to £2 16s. 3d. The Court held that though there had been an infringement of the letter of the "award, the circumstances showed there had been no breach of its spirit. The application by the Union for enforcement wa,s therefore dismissed.
Evidence was taken in the dispute brought by the Freezers' Union against tihe two local freezing companies. The Union asked for Is. 3d. an hour and Is. 9d. overtime, double time for Sundays and holidays, equal division of work, no subcontracting to b« allowed, an hour for each meal, no longer time than four hours to be allowed between meals. The taking of evidence will be resumed tomorrow. The President said lie would not fix a time for hearing the dispute between the shearers and .sheep owners. He could1 not say whether or noli the case could be taken before the end of the year. He suggested a conference be held to make arrangements for tihe coming season. The representatives of both sides met and decided to hold a, conference in Christchureh on October 3rd, when the question in dispute will be gone into, and an attempt made to come to an amicable settlement.
