REDUCED RAILWAY CHARGES..

WELLINGTON, September 23.

The reduced nates on railways, as authorised in the Financial Statement, are gazetted, The passenger fare reductions) are principally for long distances of 50 imiles and upwards, and also on tourist tickets, picnic parties, factory hands, etc. With l'egard to flhe goods rates for carriage of manure, dairy produce, sud stock, and wool are reduced. The reduced nates come into force on October 12th.

The new scale of fares and charges: will come Into force on the Government railways on 12th October. At present the ordinary single fare is at the rate of Id. per mile, but on and after 12tli October the amount charged foir distances between 50 and 100 males will be at the rate of |d. per mile, while for distances of 100 miles and over only a halfpenny a mile will be charged. In the case of, return tickets, the amount will be double ordinaory fare. The following will show hofw| the new rates will compare with those now in force. For a journey of 100 males the first-class single fare will be list 7d., as against 12s. 7d., and second-class single fare 7s. 6d. as compared with. Bs. Bd.; for 150 miles Jthe reductionsi mi single fare -wilt be—First-class, from 18s. lOd. to 15s. 9d., second-class frown 12s. 7d. to 9s. 6d. If a journey of 200 miles (one way only) is taken, a first-class passenger will pay 16s. 9d. instead! of 255. Id., as at present, and a second-class passenger 11s.. 7d., instead of 19s*. lid. There are also to be reductions in picnic, school and factory fares, and special concessions! will be made to people -wiho> take out round tickets for the Hot Lakes, Cold Lakes, and Hanmer Springs during the cummer ancmtlis. The Department has also decided upon reductions for the carriage of daiiy produce, artificial manunes1, and many other lines. Provision is made for the carriage of motor cars, motor cycles, and motor tricycles, and alsoi for the conveyance of homes by all mail and express trains. The rates foi1 wool have been largely reduced, and reductions 'have also been made for the carriage of artificial manure and tar required by local bodies, bacon, hams, eggs, honey, cheese, poultry, etc. The time for the return of stud stock to owners ha* been increased from one month to three months.
