THE MANAWATU RAILWAY.
WELLINGTON, September 21. A deputation waited on Sir Joseph Ward to-day to complain about the inefficiency of suburban traffic on the Manawatu Railway. Sir Josfeph Ward promised to- try to indluce the comipany to improve the service, but .pointed! out that Oiei coutd not compel it to run more trains, as the company had an, undoubted right to manage its awn business in the interest of shareholders. His experience of Government lines led him to believe that the company would be doing a proper thing ta iprovide a proper, suburban service. If the Government food the line it would immediately provide the service asked for. Sir Joseph Ward went on to say he had been strongly in favour of the Government having running rights over the Manawatu Tine, so as to ran through to New Plymouth. He had been urging that for some time, and hoped they could arrive at an agreement to bring it about. If it was arranged it would give an increased service ta New Plymouth, and certainly to Patanerston Nbrtihi. Thalt, h6wever, would be quite irrespective of any separate suburban service such as was now being urged. He was trying to arrange an agreement that would! make the service on the line .a very much better one. than it was now. He hoped "he company would see it was to its arvantage to come to a fadr arrangement.
