Vessels in Difficulties.
AUCKLAND, September 19,
At daybreak on Wednesday morning the Norwegian barque Hjems, in ballast, from East London (South Africa.), attempted to cross the Kaipara Bar during a heavy southwest gale. At about 5 a.m. she was. obliged to let go her anchors, or she would have stranded on the Tory Shoal. The .captain waited until high water, when the vessel floated over the Shoal and was picked up by the tug Sterling, after losing two anchors and chains and also her windlass.
Yesterday the barque Emerald, also from' East London, while attempting to cross the bar grounded on the south shore. Th» little steamer Pilot went out to her assistance, and as she was leaking the crew begged to be taken off. This wa,«. done, and the crew were landed at Pouto. The Pilot then returned to the barque and stood bvxmtil the tide rose, when the vessel floated off. The Pilot made fast and towed her up the Otamatea, where she now lies.
