At the Magistrate's" Court yesterday, William Read, a settler at Black Point, i was charged with threatening to shoot his wife and alarming another settler with a revolver. He was remanded till Thursday. • An old age pensioner was fined 20s and ordered to forfeit a month's pension, with 9s costs, for procuring liquor for a prohibited person. INVERCARGILL, September 2. The Supreme Court sittings opened before Judge Williams, who congratulated the jury on the lightness of the calendar. Samuel Stanford, for perjury, was admitted -to probation) for twelve months. The "Grand Jury returned "no bill" in the case of William Stilmouth, for perjury.
At the Supreme Court Robert Carlysle, an old offender, with several aliases, was convicted of breaking and entering and stealing from a hut at Mabel Bush. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. This concluded the criminal business. INGLEWOOD, September 2. A young mstn named Richard Taylor, of Tariki, arrested on warrant, was brought before the Justices this morning, charged with carnally knowing a girl under 10 years. On the application of the police he was remanded to the .Stipendiary Magistrate's Court on the 10th inst. Bail Avas allowed, and was forthcoming, himself in £100 and two'sureties of £50 each. ' CHRISTCHURCH, September 2. An unusual case came before the Magistrate's Court- yesterday, when a fisherman named Lavtence Joyce claimed £10 for recovering the body of a young maa named Stubberfield, drowned on January 12th whilst bathing' at the Sumner Estuary. He alleged that the father of the deceased offered £10 reward and only "paid £1. The Bench gave judgment for the defendant.
