Ward stated that the Government had decided that the Commission of Inquiry into the troubles oil the troopship Britannic would consist of Sir William Russell and Messrs McNab and Millar. THE LOAN BILL. In moving the third reading of the Aid to Public Works dbd Land Settlement Bill, Sir J. G. Ward announced that, the revenue for the first four moutths. of this financial year was sixty thousand pounds greater than the revenue for the coa-rasponding period last year, notwithstanding that cash land sales showed a decrease of £8000. The details of the various departments for the four months of this .year were as follows : — Ordinaiy revenue! — Customs £633,050, as against £608,912 for corresponding period last year; stamps £241,001, as against £282.952; post and telegraph cash receipts £32,714, as against £32,538; land tax £1998 against £1132 ; income tax £6925 against £3859; baer duty £25,735 against £25,646; railways £603,838 against £561,345; registration and other fees £15,762 against £9480; marine £10,094 against £9082; miscellaneous. £14,221 against £27,485 ; territorial cash land sales £12.418 against £30.527; deferred payment land sales £2293 against £2543; pastoral rente, etc., £27,087 against £21,804: totals, £1,627,139 as against £1,547,372. Considering that this w-is the early portion of the year, that was a splendid result, and must do a great deal c!f good to the country. We were passing through abnormal times in every sense, and he found that the railway revenue for July was £5000 greater tham for the same month last year. The latter months of the year were usually better than the earlier months, and the buoyancy he had indicated ou#ht to allay any anxiety on the pairt of *x>me member's to appeared to fear the ability of the country to pay interest on the loan new proposed.
