BOROUGH COUNCIL

MARTON, Tuesday. The adjourned meeting of the above was hold last night. Present: His Worship flic Mayor (Mr. McDonald), Crs. Read, Anderson, White, SignaJl, Remington, Hunt. Robson, and Richardson.

From Sir Joseph Ward, advising an inspection of back yardis on account of plague. Cr. Hunt moved—''That residents be asked to lay poison for one week." Second-
Ed by Cr. Signal!* and carried. The .aayor moved—"That this Council vote £50 to the Coronation expense." Secoic'ed by Cr. Remington and carried. From R/angitikiei Football Sub-union, applying for permission to play on' the old portion of the Park, as the new part was not. sufficiently drained. Cr. Hunt submitted a plan for drainage, totalling1 a. cost of £17.
Cr. Signal! moved—"l(fiat a committee, consisting of the Mayors Crs. Hunt and Remington, receive a deputation from cricket and1 football clubs to try to come to an amicable arrangement." The Mayor favoured the drainage scheme submitted by Cr. Hunt, but thought, owing to Avorks undertaken, it should stand over till next year. Ci. Hunt stated the grass would be killel if Avater was allowed to lay on it. He moved—"That the work be done forthAvtili." Seconded by Cr. White pro forma. This was lost.
From Mr. A. H .Ivnigge, secretary to the Presbyterian Church managers, submitting (plans for proposed new hall, and asking permission to stack timber inside the Park. Cr. Remington, moved and Cr. Hvnt seconded—"That necessary permission be granted." From Municipal Association, fixing 7th July as date of conference. Or. Anderson moved—"That his Worship attend if convenient." Carried.
From. Foxton Borough Council. suggesting a petition to the Governmnet re enlarging power of Loans to Local Bodies Act, to enable small boroughs to borrow as cheaply as the counties. The Mayor moved—"That the petition be signed." Seconded by Cr. Richardson and carried. From Mr. Wilson, resigning his office of town clerk, Cr. White moved—"That the resignation of Mr. Wilson be accepted with regret." Seconded by Cr. Remington. ' Cr. Read expressed' sorrow at seeing the resignation forced from such a competent officer. He had been at the Council table 10 years, and had heard no fault found with Mi. Wilson. Cr. Richardson endorsed the remarks made by Cr. Read. He had been on the Council since Mr. Wi'son's appointment, and neither Council nor public could find any complaint. No one could givs a valid reason for such a motion as tabled, as he had dtone his work faithfully. He had! every office pitchforked on to him, and could not. be in constant attendance at the office. The sanitation of the town was more important than that of librarian, and he thought the office was worth £100. There is not a man. in Marton, unless he is in an independent position, fit for the office. Mr. Wilson said, &s far as he was concerned, there was no ill-feeling in the matter. He Avas very much obliged to Cr. Read and Cr. Richard- ! son for their kindly words. Cr. Hunt moved—"That Crs, Read, Richarc&on, j White and Remington be a committee to j reorganise the duties of town clerk, and re- * port to a special meeting." The report of the Inspector of Nuis-;-,n<es, the Poundkeeper, and the Librarian was read and received.
The Inspector advised placing gravel on ro'-rpath by the school. The report. wa# adopted. Mr. Signall asked permission to erect a vc::-.lfold on the street extending from Follefcfr street. Request granted. The fallowing committees were set up : Frounce Committee—Crs. Robson, Remington, and Signall. Fire Brigade Comniittea --Crs. Anderson, Gibbons, and White. Gas I Committee—Crs. Read, Signall, and Richardson. His Worship said the Fire-Brigade Committee had' come to the conclusion that the Council could not afford outlay Tor^Jhe, lire Brigade, station at present, but suggested recommending the incoming Council to build same next year. Cr. Remington moved that, the report be adopted. Cr. Hunt thought the work could b( gone on with as the Brigade was in a posi tion to pay the interest. Cr. Signall seconded the resolution which Avas carried. Inspectors for month—Crs. Hunt am Gibbons.
