Per Prees Association

AUCKLAND, January 3l' A letter was^recsived by; the Chamber, of Commerce from the Premier< in answer! to a resolution of Ahe CJ -amber regarding- the dismissal of the men from the railway i works having forced some traders into the Bankruptcy Court. Mr. Seddou pointed out that when a contractor employed men by the day or week, he did not study the interest of the traders nor storekespers^ in the vicinity of the work, and in, the once of co-operative works the Government were in exactly the same position as a rr!vat*: contractor who employed men1 -n'hon re' quired and dismissed them when necessary. He considered-it quite a new doctrine that the interests of traders were to be studied as a factor in public works. He would 'respectfully suggest that the Chamber lia<l overlooked the fact that the losses in question were included in the risks of the trade. The Government had paid1 the men, and lie considered they would settle wjth the storekeeper, .and'if they had not done, so it was surely too much to blame the Government for the non-payment oi' debts between private persons. The letter i*as received, the Chairman remarking1 it showed the necessity of being careful as to what kind of letters they sent to the Premier. :
