WELLINGTON v. HAWKE'S BAY.

WELLINGTON, December K(,

Although1 their batting yesterday was of the poorest description, the Wellington men rose to the occasion to-day^ and scored more than a creditable win over Hawke's Bay by eight wickets. With 155 to get in the second innings, they lost Gore's wicket without a run scored. Richardson and Midlane, a veteran of a hundred fights, and a youngster still in his teens, then defied all the boiwling for an hour and a half, and practically made the game secure. Midlane hit very freely, and placed 59 to his credit before jumping out to a slow one and getting stumped. Trott tried all tibe wiled at his command to separate them without avail, and did not secure any wickets. After Midlane, Richardson and Tucker earned on the scoring, and no further wicket was lost. Neither Midlane ncir Richardson gave a chance, but Tucker at 19 was badly missed at mid-on off Trott. The visitors were handicapped by the loss of the wicket keeper, whose hand was disabled, and 21 extras figured in the total' scores.! Hawke's Bay 109 and 100. Wellington 54 and 157 for two wickets—Midlano ,59, Richardson (not out) 45, Tucker (not out) 32. Dent got one wicket and Ongley one. In the Hawke's Bay second innings Hales secured 3 for 20 and Tucker 4 for 40.

Hfllloinore, the wicket-keeper of the Hawke's Bay team, returns home in consequence of a smashed finger. Young replaces him. ■
