ALLEGED ILLEGAL BETTING.
A MAGISTRATE OVER-RULED BY < JUSTICES. I'cr Press Association. DUNEDIN, November 22. The first of the charges of betting totalizator odds against Peter Grant, of Barnett and Grant'—being a sequel of the recent raid by the police—came on at the Police Court to-day. In addition to Mr Graham, S.M.. four J's.P. put in an appearance and took their seats on the bench. Two witnesses called declined to give evidence which might incriminate them. . Mr Graham, S.M., thought he had power to issue a certificate of indemnity, and the Crown Prosecutor produced a telegram from the Justice Department that if the witnesses gave full evidence they would not be proceeded against. The majority of the Bench overruled the Magistrate's opinion, and the case was dismissed on the ground that the amount paid out was not the same as the totalisator dividend. " There are 58 other charges, winch were adjourned to sth December.
