Fantham's red Shorthorn bull Southern Cross, \ which gained second prize at the Show yesterday is to be shipped to the Argentine. Mr. Fantham values the bull, which is only a yearling, at 300 guineas. According to a wire from Auckland, Dr. Fleming, of Tauranga, was gored in the abdomen by a bull which entered his garden when being swum ashore. His condition is serious. Mrs Fleming was also knocked down by the bull, bub was not seriously hurt; Tho Upper Congo Railway Company, with a capital of a million sterling, has been formed to carry on the construction of the line throucm the Congo Free State, which guarantees the company four per cent, on its outlay. Mr Walter Freeman, the well-known railway caterer, has been successful in obtaining the lease of the two railway refreshment cars running between Palmerston and New Plymouth. The lease is for 3 years and 4 months, and Mr Freeman will take up the running on December 2nd. A telegram from Hawera states that applications for sections in the Takaora Estate fell short of anticipations, only thirteen being received for the homestead, and for :-fche next largest section there were no applicants. His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington arrived in town vesterdaiy and will hoM a Confirmation service at Christ Church this evening at 7.30 o'clock. The Bishop will also administer the rite at St. Marys, Upokomraro, next Sunday morning, and at fclie Collegiate School Cliapel in the evening. The ladiesi and gentlemen taking part in the musical programme this evening for the Arts and drafts Exhibition are Miss Price and -Miss Violet Price, Misses Wilford and Austin, Messirs. Hatherly, Lennard, and Hemus, and Matsers Spackman and Leonard; also a recitation by Mr. Ritchings. Yesterday morning's- "Hawke's Bay Herald" says—At the Cathedral yesterday morning the Dean of Waiapu united Mr A. Walworth, of Wanganui, and Miss Kitty Croucher, daughter of a highly-respected resident, Mr J. Croucher. The bridesmaids were Miss Ada Croucher and Miss Duke Rogers, and Mr Arthur Walworth attended his brother. The friends of the newlymarried coutle .(who left for Wanganui in "the afternoon) sent them many choice gifts. Sunday next is "Temperance Sunday," and sermons will be preached in the Protestant churches of many lands. Not only will the cause, of temperance be advocated in the local pulpits on- Sunday next, but a temperance meeting will be held on Monday in St. Paul's Hall .at 8 p.m., when addresses will be delivered .by the Revs. H. R. Dewsbury, A. Dewdney, and J. Cocker. The Rev. R. M. Ryburn will preside. The moral suasion aspect of the temperance question will be dealt with, and the speakers will move in particular seek to persuade non-abstainers to sign the pledge. The public are invited to the gathering.
