CORRESPONDENCE.

THE EASTOWN ROAD

To the Editor

Sir,—My attention has been drawn to a letter appearing in your Thursday's issue relative to tha above-named- matter, and I feel I must make a few remarks in reply in defence of Cr. Anderson, whom it appears plain it is sought'to injure. In every community one meets with men holding fossilised and warped views with regard to all .suggested improvements; others whose few brains are so unbalanced as to be incapable of coming to a common-sense decision by reason of their being unable to comprehend any extensive schemes of improvements ; and, yet again, others who purposely distort facts, careless of any injury they may inflict on the neighbourhood, in order to attempt to injure or cast discredit on another man. Now, in plain English, "Ratepayer1' is either an ass, or he is criminally careless in his statements, or his assertions are intended only to injure Cr. Anderson, without-airy regard to any other considerations. Cr. Anderson has acted always and only in the interests of the whole of the locality ho represents. He has never acted selfishly, and because that legarthy which characterises many members of local bodies, is a minus quantity in him, and because he displays a keen activity in his district's advancement, there are those, ready to attribute selfish motives only to him. Such detractors should be relegated to .some spot on earth where "live" men and pi-ogress we^a not .necessary. The Road Board has no intention of spending money on either Ikamoana Avenue or Kepn Street, excepting a very small portion on both, tendered necessary to avoid a narrow street—6o links wide, instead of 150 links. No sane person could by any manner of argument condemn the Board's action in this. They had no alternative. As to there being no houses within chains of these streets, "Ratepayer" has forced thia position upon himself; either he knows nothing whatever of the matter or he stated that which he knows to be false in order to mislead the public- Let anyone examine the whole of the facts,.and ho must come to the conclusion that j "Ratepayer" has no regard whatever for tho "whole truth,'' and for some reason best known to himself, is. trying to mislead the ratepayers.—-I am, etc.,
