HAWERA, August 14.
In the District Court, judgment -was given in the case Peebles v. Bate and others, claim for damages for loss of plaintiff's son, who was accidentally killed at the sports held at Normanby last Boxing Day. The boy was standing near a shooting gallery, when a pellet from a pea rifle entered his stomach.
The Judge held that the defendants — the Sports Committee —were jguilty of negligence in not making an inquiry as to the capability of the man in charge of the gallery and in nob keeping sux>ervision over the shooting. . Judge Kettle held that he was bound by the decision of Justice Williams in the .case Gench v. North Otago A. and P. Association, and gave judgment for plaintiff on the main issue, but. reserved his decision as to the amount of damages to> be assessed.
. It is likely the defendants will go to the Court of Appeal. AUCKLAND, August 14. At the Supreme Court, George Fitzherbert was sentenced to five years' hard labour for forgery, and two years for theft, sentences to be concurrent. Judge Connolly said the accused was one of the most hardened criminals ever before the Court. Adolph Bens was sentenced to four years' hard labour for forgery and false pretences. CHRISTCHURCH, August 14. Charles Sutton was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for. forgeiy this mornWELLINGTON, August 14. At the Supreme Court Albert Watkins was found guilty of assault and robbery, and remanded for the report of the Proba- j tion Officer.
