The deciding match for the ThursdayShield Competition was played on Thursday afternoon on the Bacecourse between the Wanganui. A and B teams. The game, as expected, was a very exciting one, and ' resulted'<in a draw, both sides scoring two goals, but as the £ team! had a lead of one point previous to this match, they win the Thursday competition. G. Larking (A) and E. Willis (B) bullied off, and the B's forwards soon had! the ball up in their opponents' twenty-fives, but failed to score. The A's were relieved by.Carrell hitting the ball well down the field, and from a brilliant rush by their forwards, G. Larknig scored the first goal. On resuming play the A's still had the advantage, and narrowly escaped scoring several occasions. The 'B's, rallied and again tried hard to score, but the A's were not to be denied, and after the ball had travelled the length of the field Gould, who followed up fast, sscured the second goal for the As. At the call of half-time no further score had resulted. On starting the second half a couple of changes were made in the B teant, Carey playing goal and Wilson coming up to wing forward. The A's had the sun at their backs in this spell, and on the previous spell's play it looked as if they must win, but the B forwards, playing a very fast game, had1 all the best of the second spell, Perrett and Coe both registerng goals: Coe's goal was a very smart piece of work. For the A's Larking (at bully), and Loftus, Ryan, Malone and Gould (forwards) all worked hard, and n the' backs Oliver (at goal) and Goss (at half) played well. The B forwards, Per-. retfc, Willis, B.'Larking, Wilson, Carey and Coe showed good combination and gave the A backs a- very merry time in the second spell, on one occasion Coe hitting the ball through the posts from-a very difficult angle, but the whistle went for "stick." All the backs showed good form, Pumell and Harvey (at full-back) playing a very safe game. The match was veryeven in the first spell, but the B's showed far more dash than their opponents in. the second half. Mr D. Rowe refereed, and gave every satisfaction. The thanks of players are due to this gentleman for attending every Shield match played this season.
The final match for the Shield between Eastown (the winner of the Saturday competition) and the Wanganui B team, will ba played in a week or .two, and, by the way, the latter team has improved, so a good go should be the result.
A match between the Wanganui Thursday and Saturday players will also be played during next month, so it behoves all players to keep in form. Last season this gamo resulted in a draw. -
The Wanganui Saturday players and the T.Y.M.I. are requested to attend the Racecourse this afternoon at, 3 o'clock to play a practice against Ea.Bto.wa.
