WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of theWanganui County Council was held yesterday, when there were present—Mr J. W. Baker (chairman), Crs McGregor, Mason, Robinson, Anderson,'Fletcher, Poison, Georgetti and Wilson.
Minutes.—The minutes of the previous meeting •were read and confirmed. County Conference. —The chairman reported to the Council upon what took place at the County Council Conference, and that the general opinion was that the, provisions of "The Counties Act, 1881," should be retained, but that the members were not in favour of dual government.. Fencing.—Mr W. Craig was informed that the Council would look intol the matter of fencing the Kaiwaka> Block. Library Grant.—Messrs J. T. Stewart, G. S. Bridge and the Rev. T. B. Maclean waited on the Council on behalf of the subscribers of the Public Library, and asked for a grant towards the institution, urging its claims to practical support with similar arguments to those adduced when the deputation waited on the Borough Council and Waitotara County Council. The .application was discussed", at considerable length, Cra Poison, Wilson, Mason and the chairman supporting a proposal to vote £10, which -was opposed by Crs. Georgetti, Fletcher, McQregor, Robinson, arid Anderson. The chairman explained to the deputation that the Council sympathised with the application, but pointed out that the Wafaganui County Council's position was scarcely the same as the Waitotara County, inasmuch as a great deal of the work of the former body was done by the Road Boards, and lie suggested that they should be approached by the deputation. Cr. Georgetti favoured granting £5, Cr. Fletcher, considered the Council should devote its money to the roads, and Cr. Robinson explained that the upper portion of tho County had no benefit whatever from the Library and it would be unfair to taxe the ratepayers in, Mangawhero and Upper Wangaehu districts. The chairman agreed to draft a letter to the Road Boards, pointing out the Council's position and suggesting that they should contribute. ' .' . ' ' .
■ Ranger.—lt Was resolved that the chairman invite the chairmen of the several Road Boards and ask for authority to appoint Mr Wall ranger for the whole County. - . "■ '■ • ' Plague Hospital.—lt was resolved that the committee appointed to arrange about the proportion payable by the Council deal with the account of the Wanganui Borough Council for plague hospital, and if it be correct to get a-cheque signed for the amount.
Road Machine.—An application was received from Mr Jas. Wilson to undertake the management of road-forming machine and to supply two horses and two men, at the rate of 30s a day. It was also, resolved that the Kaitoke Road Board be allowed the use of the road-making machine on Monday. Mangawhero Bridge.—lt was resolved that the resolution passed re proportion of cost to paid for the Mangawhero Bridge be rescinded. In connection with this matter Cr Robinson moved that the Wanganui County Council pay half the cost.
