A HAWAIIAN SENSATION.

i Judge Abram S. Humphreys, of Honolulu, has created1 the biggest sensation in Hawaii since the days of revolutions. He tas sent to gaol for 'thirty days. three of £he leading lawyers of Honolulu for contempt of court because they were doing their best to defend their client, Editor Walter G. Smith, who was on trial for alleged perjury. ■ And he followed this up, when the Acting-Governor pardoned the men, by refusing to permit them to practice in his court. The quarrel between Editor Smith and Judge Humphreys' grew out of differences in <the Republican party in Hawaii, and it has been carried on with a virulence that is seldom seen nowadays. The Judge is proprietor of a Newspaper in vaich he has not hesitated €o abuse.Smitir. without, stint, and Smith, who is far the ablest artist in invective that .Hawaii has ever'-.known, has flayed the Judge n a style that_must have furnished much comfort to his many enemies there. Here are some specimen sentences of .this-indictment of Humphreys:—"The people^ of Hawaii know.; him' as a corrupt politician on the bench, who makes it his aim to pack juries, intimidate counsel, to assail reputations, and to bear false witness against any men who are compelled to go before him seeking justice. He is known as the controlling owner of -a Newspaper which libels men and women without stint. Off the bench, the word of such a man would not be taken against the good name of any citizen. Will the c>urtj'of public opinion decide that by the liiere act of mounting the bench he becomes a man of truth and honour?"
